Photographs are taken not only by the photographer as a person, but also by the camera as a machine. The photographs featured in this collection were indeed taken by me, but they are also images captured by a camera. That camera was given to me by my father more than 20 years ago, around the time I first became interested in photography.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, which lasted for several years starting in 2020, my father began to limit his outings and gradually grew frail, as if he were a different person. Now, he simply stares out the window every day, without uttering a single word. He no longer climbs the mountains he once loved, nor does he use any electronic devices. To this day, I still feel guilty about not having been able to do anything for him during those years.
As I reflected on my connection with my father, I began using the old camera he gave me to document my own daily life. The small half-frame film camera didn’t capture photos taken with any specific purpose or intention; rather, it simply and matter-of-factly recorded the light and events of each day. It was as if, rather than me taking the photos, this small hunk of metal had appeared before me from across time and quietly captured these small moments.
This photographic project, sparked by this mysterious camera, felt almost like a fantasy. I arranged the photographs in pairs, much like the window my father used to gaze out of. The title, “Smoke and Steam,” comes from words my father spoke that remain in my memory. For me, these photographs created a gateway from a world shrouded in something—whether smoke or steam, I couldn’t tell—to a world that suddenly cleared.
